REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) is the new chemical regulation (1907/2006/EC), which entered into force on 1st June 2007. However, most of its Titles will apply starting June 1st 2008 when it will replace the present chemical directive (67/548/EEC).

The main novelty with REACH is that it places a greater responsibility on industry to manage the risks that chemicals may pose to the health and the environment.

Even though REACH is a European regulation, it has a worldwide impact, as all substances imported in the EU in the form of pure substances, preparations or articles will need to be registered.

For substances already on the market, the so-called phase-in substances, extended deadlines for registration will be granted if the manufacturer/importer of the substance pre-registers this substance between 1st June 2008 and 30th November 2008. All other substances will need to be registered before they are placed on the EU market starting from 1st June 2008.
